Coronavirus cases in the D.C. region have seen a spike in recent days.
At the end of last week, the region’s case numbers were the highest in a month, with the District reporting 66 new cases Sunday, Maryland reporting 562 and Virginia, 811, WJLA-TV (Channel 7) reported.
The new cases come in the wake of a Sept. 26 ceremony at the White House Rose Garden at which few people wore face masks and practiced social distancing. Several attendees were later diagnosed with COVID-19, the potentially deadly respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
As a result, District leaders set up a free coronavirus testing site outside the White House, along Black Lives Matter Plaza, WJLA reported.
As of Monday, D.C. had roughly 16,000 coronavirus cases and 637 related deaths, according to the city health department. Virginia had approximately 16,000 cases and 3,400 deaths, while Maryland had 132,000 cases and 3,900 deaths, according to respective online trackers in both states.
