Despite the flack that DISD receives on the regular, it’s no secret that Dallas schools continue to turn out some of the best musical talent in the nation. Bishop Dunne High School alum Alex Smalls is evidence of that fact. The Oak Cliff native was recently signed to Sony/Orchard’s Greylyfe Records.
As with most artists, Smalls’ overnight success has been years in the making. His dad was in the music industry, so Smalls was in the studio pushing faders by the time he was four years old. “The first instrument I picked up was drums,” he reminisced. “So now, I threw guitar in there, a little bit of piano, and you know, still trying to be a great musician.”
