The organization behind New York City’s annual pride parade recently announced that police will be banned from participating in the iconic celebration. This decision has sparked debate in the media and pushback from pro-police organizations. It’s also led some activists in Dallas to make similar demands.
Despite the cancellation of the official Pride Parade in Dallas this year due to concerns related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a few dozen LGBTQIA activists and allies gathered in Belo Garden on June 5th to decry the inclusion of uniformed officers. What’s more, they criticized the increasingly corporate nature of Pride events in Dallas, such as the official Dallas Pride Miller Lite Showcase Presented by Smirnoff that took place at Fair Park in lieu of the traditional parade.
