Celebration of Juneteenth endures as an important symbol of African American freedom and American history, though many Americans only became aware of it during the historic civil unrest of 2020.
In spite of COVID-19 barriers to in-person convenings, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Eta Gamma Omega Chapter Arts Committee will host its 2021 Juneteenth Showcase virtually on Monday, June 14 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The event honors the contributions of African Americans from the time their African ancestors were first brought to America’s shores to June of 1865 (when the last enslaved African Americans became aware of their freedom) and beyond.
The showcase “Despite Liberty Deferred: A Resilient People Persist, Persevere, and Press On” will put on display the brilliant, powerful story-telling and performance arts heritage that is at the core of African American resilience.
